This month, the U.S. Census Bureau released
data showing that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, kept 4.7 million Americans out of
poverty in 2011, including 2.1 million children. It used a new poverty measure that counts taxes and
non-cash government benefits.
